Caregiver Corner: Knowledge IS Power ~ and Powerful!
By Pamela Atwood, MA, Director of Dementia Care Services
Anyone who has ever been a caregiver knows that it is one of the most rewarding yet challenging roles you can have. No matter what the illness, you will be a better caregiver if you learn all you can about it, the services available in your area, and what support is available for you, the caregiver. Research proves that education and counseling for caregivers decreases burden and depression while improving the overall well-being of the person needing care.
One recent research study examined the effects of education and counseling on stroke victims and caregivers. Each intervention significantly improved quality of life. Counseling was consistently moreeffective than education alone and also resulted in better patient adjustment at1 year.
Research conducted at NYU over the past several years reinforces the same idea, and also proves that these techniques delay the need to place a patient in a nursing home or other residential facility. Education and counseling also lead to improved well-being and less depression among caregivers. What’s more, the latest research shows, the benefits are very long lasting.
